Crossing the Sahara to Italy: A Journey of Survival, Resilience, and Hope

Share a story about the furthest you’ve ever traveled from home.

Starting:

In 2016, I embarked on a journey that would forever redefine my understanding of human strength, resilience, and the sheer will to survive. Traveling from Benin City, Nigeria, to the shores of Italy via the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea is not a conventional path. It is a grueling, life-altering trek across vast landscapes, fraught with immense challenges, but ultimately driven by the universal human pursuit of a better tomorrow.

The Road North: Nigeria to Niger

The first leg of the journey began in the familiar bustling streets of Benin City, moving north through Kano, and crossing the border into Niger. Arriving in Agadez—a historic desert transit hub—the atmosphere shifted entirely. Here, the modern world faded away, replaced by the stark reality of the imminent desert crossing.

How dangerous is the Sahara migration route?

Traversing the Great Sahara

The desert demands absolute endurance. By day, the heat is blinding and intense; by night, the temperatures drop to freezing. The vastness of the Sahara is both breathtaking and terrifying. Navigating this landscape requires immense trust and psychological fortitude, as the boundaries between earth and sky seem to blur into a single, endless horizon.

The Trials of Tripoli

Reaching Tripoli, Libya, brought a different set of challenges. For two weeks, I found myself in a crowded transit camp—a place defined by uncertainty, scarcity, and the constant echo of local conflict. Survival in the camps was a test of mental fortitude. Food was scarce, anxiety was high, and every day was a lesson in patience and self-preservation. It was during these dark moments that I realized the true power of mental resilience; keeping your mind strong is the only way to keep your body moving forward.

The Mediterranean Crossing and Rescue

The final, most perilous leg of the journey was the crossing of the Mediterranean Sea. From the Libyan coast, about 100 of us boarded a heavily crowded, makeshift vessel. Packed tightly together in the pitch black of night, the open ocean felt entirely unforgiving.

But hope arrived as the sun came up. We were intercepted and safely rescued by the Italian Coast Guard, marking the official end of a long, treacherous chapter and the beginning of a brand-new life in Europe.

A Legacy of Wisdom

Surviving the desert sands and the open sea taught me that our minds are our greatest assets. To process the trauma and capture the daily strength required to survive such an ordeal, I channeled my experiences into creating a “Daily Wisdom Quotes” app. It serves as a reminder that no matter how vast the desert or how rough the sea, inner strength can carry you to safety.

My journey from Nigeria to Italy was a test of fire, but it left me with an unbreakable spirit and a deep appreciation for the gift of life.

  1. Gaddemn shege . . .
It’s great to know you lived to tell the tale . A family close to mine knew about the death of their son, who had embarked on a similar journey when someone found an ID on him and sent it to his family . A sad one indeed.

    1. Thank you for sharing your story. It’s important to remember the risks involved in such journeys and the tragic outcomes that can occur. My thoughts go out to the families who lost their loved onec. Can’t wait to tell the story in video detail someday. A lot happened, can’t say it all in a month .

  2. I can imagine what you meant by a lot happened . . . I’ve watched several documentaries on trips through the Sahara, with corpses littering the vast lands.

One of my bucketlist is travelling through the same desert, too, but once I reveal it to people, it’s like they think I’m crazy or something . Lol !

    1. It’s true that the Sahara Desert can be a treacherous place for travelers, as evidenced by the documentaries you mentioned. But it’s important to follow your passions and dreams, even if others may not understand. Just make sure to properly prepare and take necessary precautions if you decide to embark on that journey. Good luck with your bucket list goal👍🏾!

  3. Of course, I always usually follow my gut feelings, just that sometimes you need accomplices in achieving your goals. The only reason I share my thoughts . I am looking for team members as it’s not achievable all alone.
    😆 🤣 😆

    1. It’s great that you recognize the importance of having a team to support you in achieving your goals. Collaboration and teamwork can often lead to greater success and a more fulfilling journey. I hope you find the right team members to join you on your adventure through the Sahara Desert! 🤣
